Wrestling Season is Here

Always an interesting assignment; the only sport that allows me to make extensive use of Nikon’s Advanced Wireless Lighting system.  It also taxes the high-ISO capabilities of my cameras more than any other sports that I shoot.

D7000 Hoops

D7000 Does Hoops!

While the D7000 is classified as a “prosumer” or “enthusiast” body, it definitely has its place on the hardwood.  Whether as a remote or handheld, it turns in very good performance despite its limitations.

Finally: Nikon 64-bit NEF Codec

November 14th, 2011 · No Comments

Windows Explorer

NEF icons & preview

A year or two after 64-bit Windows became de rigeur for serious users, Nikon has finally updated its NEF RAW Codec to 64-bit compatibility.  What’s this, you ask?  Simply put, it’s a translator that allows Windows to generate thumbnails and previews of Nikon RAW images (.NEF and .NRW formats).

Almost as long as Nikon has been tardy in providing 64-bit support, I’ve been using the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack.  For the modest price of $15, the Codec Pack supports all RAW formats of just about any camera, and is blazing fast.  (Even on my speedster 2nd-gen Core i5 laptop there’s a noticeable delay when previewing D300s NEF files with the Nikon codec; not so with FPV.)  Or go for the full monty and for $50, get the Codec Pack and FastPictureViewer Pro, a photo viewer extraordinaire with IPTC editor, batch processor, tethered shooting capabilities, and more.

Swimming (and Diving)

October 31st, 2011 · 2 Comments

Swim meets are always a challenge: that pesky water gets in the way, and indoor pools often have weird (and dark) lighting.  Technology can be your friend.

Pretec Class 16 SDHC
