Purchaser’s of Sigma‘s new 18-200/f3.5-5.6 OS lens noticed a new lens cap design for Sigma, incorporating a center-pinch release. A Sigma official has confirmed to me that this cap will appear on other lenses in the future, and will eventually be available for sale as an accessory item.
Like the new Nikon caps introduced within the past couple of years, it’s easy to underestimate the value of such a simple design change. I’ve long taken the route of purchasing Tamron or Hama caps to replace the ‘stock’ caps on my Nikon and Sigma lenses. Tamron caps are inexpensive ($8.50 each) and very durable, with a strong (albeit plastic) spring to keep the cap in place and a good “bite.” Of course, they sport the center-pinch release.

thanks for this tidbit, I just got a used Sigma 120-300 and 30, and really hate the lens caps…

For the 30/f1.4, you’ll need a 62mm lens cap; Adorama doesn’t stock a Tamron cap in that size, but the new Nikon caps are available in several sizes. I’ve added links to the main article above.
