On March 20, I photographed the 2010 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship in Salem, Virginia. While there was plenty of great basketball action just like my last trip to the DIII Final Four, I thought a gallery of shots capturing the excitement of the championship celebration would be an interesting change.
I feel the key to capturing great images of events – be it the action on the court or field, or the emotion on the sidelines – is to separate yourself from the pack. Of course, the needs of your client must be considered, and sometimes the obligatory trophy-hoisting and high-fiving shots can’t be avoided. Don’t give up a chance to get away from the bulk of shooters who are just getting frame after frame of the same old, same old.
Little details can tell an interesting story, too. Sometimes the little notes athletes write to themselves inconspicuously on shoes, sweatbands, and the like, can provide the perfect accent.
Don’t forget the periphery of the celebration; anticipation of what is to come can be just as interesting as what is the center of attention right now.
And throwing unusual perspectives into the mix only adds to the unique angles on the visual cliches.
But of course…the mandatory trophy-hoisting shot isn’t so bad – especially if you can give it some context.

Great shots Chuck. I saw you shooting the shoe and was wondering “What is he shooting!” Nice… Great spending time with you. Disks are on the way.
